Aquatic Insect Bioconstructions Modify Fine?Sediment Entrainment and Mobility

چکیده

The importance of two-way interactions between animals and the physical hydraulic sedimentological environment are increasingly recognized (e.g., zoogeomorphology). Caddisflies (Trichoptera) a group aquatic insects known for their bioconstructions, particularly cases built from fine sediment silk. Caddisfly differ in size, shape density incorporated sediment, case construction may therefore affect mobility these sediments rivers. However, although communities caddisfly often use substantial quantities construction, effect bioconstructions on transport rivers is unknown. We flume experiment to compare bed shear stress required (a) empty (b) individual particles, following disaggregation case. three species were considered; two that construct different styles tubular (Potamophlax latipennis Sericostoma personatum) one builds domed (Agapetus fuscipes). P. S. personatum easier entrain than grains into them, whilst A. fuscipes not. Despite low mass, most them because impeded rolling. These findings important understand how differences design species, reflect adaptation strategies turbulent river habitat. Furthermore, results suggest un-attached be preferentially transported over other particles thus, where occur high abundance, they increase fluvial entrainment sand.

Biotic interactions modify the effects of oxygen on insect gigantism.

S ize is one of the most significant and fascinating characteristics of all organisms. Its significance derives from the strong relationships, especially in animals, between body size and many physiological traits and ecological characteristics (1, 2). What makes size fascinating is its extremes. They not only compel wonder at deviation from the average for a given group (3), but also provide i...

Large Scale Relationship between Aquatic Insect Traits and Climate

Climate is the predominant environmental driver of freshwater assemblage pattern on large spatial scales, and traits of freshwater organisms have shown considerable potential to identify impacts of climate change. Although several studies suggest traits that may indicate vulnerability to climate change, the empirical relationship between freshwater assemblage trait composition and climate has b...

Insect Designs for Improved Robot Mobility

SYNOPSIS: The biorobotics group at CWRU follows a strategy of close interaction between engineers and neurobiologists to create improved robot designs and gain insights into neural control of legged locomotion. A series of legged vehicles has been developed. The first 2 robots were not based upon a particular insect. Robot I walked with insect gaits using network controllers. Robot II walked on...
